Barcelona vs Sevilla: La Liga Match Preview

FC Barcelona return to La Liga action on Sunday as they prepare to host Sevilla FC at Camp Nou, aiming to strengthen their grip on the title race.

Barcelona head into this fixture following a 1-1 draw with Newcastle United in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 tie at St James' Park. While it was not their most impressive display, the Catalan giants remain well placed to finish the job in the return leg on home soil and secure a spot in the quarter-finals.

Despite being eliminated in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, Barcelona remain firmly in control of their La Liga destiny. The side managed by Hansi Flick currently sits four points clear of Real Madrid at the top of the table.

Barcelona suffered a surprising defeat to Girona FC in mid-February, but they quickly responded with three consecutive league victories against Levante UD, Villarreal CF, and Athletic Bilbao, regaining momentum in the title race.

Earlier this season, Barcelona suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Sevilla at Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, but historically they have dominated this fixture. The Catalan side has won seven of the last eight meetings between the two teams, including a convincing 5-1 victory in last season’s corresponding encounter.

Sevilla face a difficult challenge travelling to Camp Nou, as they have not beaten Barcelona away from home since January 2010 in the Copa del Rey, while their last La Liga win at Camp Nou dates back to December 2002.

However, Matías Almeyda has guided Sevilla through a relatively stable run of form. The Andalusian side has lost only one of their last eight league matches, demonstrating improved consistency compared to last season when they narrowly avoided relegation after finishing 17th in La Liga.

Sevilla enter the contest following back-to-back draws against Real Betis and Rayo Vallecano, while their most recent defeat came away to RCD Mallorca at the start of February.

The visitors currently sit 14th in the league standings, having recorded eight wins, seven draws and 12 defeats from 27 matches, leaving them six points clear of the relegation zone. Sevilla’s away form has been relatively respectable, collecting 15 points from 13 away fixtures, and they may arrive slightly fresher than Barcelona after the Catalan side’s midweek European commitments.

Team News

Barcelona have received a boost ahead of the match with both Lamine Yamal and Eric García available for selection. Yamal returned to training after missing a session earlier in the week due to discomfort, while Eric Garcia has recovered from muscular fatigue.

However, Barcelona remain without several important players including Andreas Christensen, Jules Koundé, Alejandro Balde, and Frenkie de Jong, all of whom are sidelined through injury. Midfielder Gavi was named on the bench against Newcastle and could see increased involvement in this fixture.

Changes from the midweek Champions League match are expected, with Marc Casadó a possible addition in midfield and Ferran Torres pushing for a starting role in attack.

Sevilla will be without Peque Fernández and Marcao, who are both ruled out through injury. Meanwhile, Rubén Vargas and Neal Maupay remain doubts as they continue to recover from hamstring problems.

Vargas has only featured once since November but has recently returned to training and could be included in the squad. In attack, Isaac Romero may be given an opportunity to start, while José Ángel Carmona could be deployed on the left side to strengthen Sevilla’s defensive structure.

Barcelona will aim to maintain their strong record against Sevilla at Camp Nou and extend their lead at the top of La Liga, while the visitors will be hoping to cause an upset and continue their recent run of improved form.
